Email and DNS

Multifaceted solutions for your needs

Nowadays, much relevant information passes via emails, with the direct consequence that email servers have become a vital tool for the ordinary functioning of the company or organization.

Since 1994 INRETE has managed email services on behalf of third parties, guaranteeing high reliability and continuity of service.

In addition to providing services through its own infrastructure, INRETE can install hardware and software systems at the customer premises operating Enterprise-type email services. INRETE can also supply systems and application software needed to implement PEC/eIDAS services.

For the provision of email services, INRETE does not impose unilateral contracts but, using network connections, devices, and servers located within the Italian state abides by all the relevant national legislation and regulations, such as:

  • Art. 15 of the Italian Constitution:
Freedom and confidentiality of correspondence and of every other form of communication is inviolable. Limitations may only be imposed by judicial decision stating the reasons and in accordance with the guarantees provided by the law.

  • Paragraph 1 of the art. 10 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms on Freedom of Expression:
Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference...

  • Regulation (EU) 2016/679 updated to the corrections published in the Official Journal of the European Union 127 of 23 May 2018 and accepted in Italy with Legislative Decree 10 August 2018, n. 101.

INRETE works as a simple "System Administrator" as defined by the Italian Guarantor for the protection of personal data with various provisions formalized in the Official Gazette of the Italian Republic:
- G.U. n. 287 of 9 December 2008
- G.U. n. 300 of 24 December 2008
- G.U. n. 45 of February 24, 2009
- G.U. n. 149 of 30 June 2009

INRETE mail services operate on servers located within the Italian Republic. Therefore, they are an immediate solution to the critical issues highlighted by the Schrems II judgment, referred to in the next paragraph.

Schrems II judgment

Ruling of 16 July 2020 of the Court of Justice of the European Union ('Schrems II judgment')

As also highlighted by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) declared the European Commission's Privacy Shield Decision invalid on account of invasive US surveillance programmes, thereby making transfers of personal data on the basis of the Privacy Shield Decision illegal.

The requirements of US domestic law cause this, and in particular certain programmes that allow US public authorities to access personal data transferred from the EU to the US for national security purposes, entail limitations on the protection of personal data that are not configured to meet requirements substantially equivalent to those provided for by EU law and that such legislation does not grant data subjects enforceable rights in court against the US authorities.

In light of this degree of interference with the fundamental rights of persons whose data are transferred to that third country, the Court declared the decision on the adequacy of the American Privacy Shield and its compatibility with the European GDPR regulation invalid.

DNS/MX Multilocation

Aiding the Email services, INRETE's DNS and MX Multilocation services allow companies and organizations to ensure the continuity of their Internet services by improving the overall architecture involving DNS servers and secondary backup email servers. Specifically, these services strengthen accessibility and communication with the outside world.

DNS/MX Multilocation services allow you to:

  • have an adequate number of geographically distributed servers connected through multiple and redundant connections, ensuring continuity of service even in the event of simultaneous failure of multiple servers
  • eliminate time-consuming administrative tasks by entrusting them directly to INRETE (registrations, payments, deadlines, etc.)

Thanks to the MX Multilocation service, in the event of a malfunction of the primary email servers, the MxBackup servers continue to accept and store all the correspondence flow addressed to the company, delivering it later on when the primary email server returns fully functional.

The reliability and continuity of services are vital factors to those who work on the net. INRETE's DNS/MX Multilocation service guarantees both.
